According to Mr. Mai Van Binh (residing in Chau Thanh district, Ben Tre province), the land in Ben Tre is very suitable for growing coconut trees, which are highly favored by the locals. After the Lunar New Year of the Dragon Year 2024, the high price of coconuts has excited coconut growers.
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Dung, a trader specializing in purchasing and selling coconuts in Ben Tre province, stated that currently, the price of fresh coconuts type 1 purchased at the garden is about 50,000 VND per dozen, normal green coconuts are about 35,000 VND per dozen, and dried coconuts are about 85,000 VND per dozen.
"The price of dried coconuts has increased by more than 10,000 VND per dozen after Tet, so traders will come directly to the farmers' gardens to purchase," Mr. Dung shared.
Chairman of the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee Tran Ngoc Tam shared that previously, coconut trees were not recognized as industrial plants. Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is planning to develop various industrial plants, including coconut trees in Ben Tre and other provinces.
According to Mr. Tam, based on this plan, Ben Tre will develop a project to develop coconut trees in the direction of industrial plants. Currently, the Ben Tre Provincial Party Committee has issued Resolution 07 on the development of concentrated production areas, including chains of local specialty fruit trees.
"Coconut trees in Ben Tre have developed quite successfully, with fresh coconuts and processed coconut products already exported. When recognized as a national industrial plant, Ben Tre province will develop a project to organize the growth of this type of tree," Mr. Tam informed.
Earlier, on January 26, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued Decision No. 431 approving the project to develop key industrial plants until 2030 (including coffee, rubber, tea, cashews, pepper, coconuts). According to this plan, by 2030, the coconut cultivation area will be about 195-210,000 hectares; the key coconut growing region in the Mekong Delta will be about 170-175,000 hectares, the coastal area of the South Central region will be 16-20,000 hectares, and the remaining 9-15,000 hectares will be grown in provinces in the North Central, Southeast, etc. In addition, new coconut varieties will be introduced into production, such as dwarf green coconuts, Malaysian coconuts, pineapple coconuts...
By 2030, over 30% of coconut cultivation areas will follow GAP procedures and equivalents. The coconut cultivation area with assigned planting area codes will reach about 30%.
Furthermore, combining the construction of coconut garden development spaces with eco-tourism, culinary experiences...
According to the report of the Ben Tre Provincial People's Committee, the coconut cultivation area in the province is currently about 79,075 hectares, an increase of 1.35% compared to the same period; the harvested output in January is about 57.98 million fruits, an increase of 3.82% compared to the same period.
