Vietnamese member of standing committee in Egypt has disclosed that Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail will start importing rice to increase reserve and control the market after several months of narrowing domestic production campaign.
Egypt used to be the biggest producer and exporter rice (medium grain) of Middle Eastern and Northern Africa area for decades. However, Egyptian production of rice is heavily threatened due to lack of water, particularly when Nile river was separated by Ethiopia water dam.
The Prime Minister of Egypt has not announced the exact time and imported quantity. Otherwise, according to export information, the quantity would be 200,000 – 300,000 tons after overseeing the reserve of rice from previous year.
Egypt has remained its free policy for imported rice and release taxes on that goods. The nation continues abandoning rice export to balance domestic rice supply and demand.
