According to the General Department of Customs, in the first month of the year, the whole country imported 5.077 million tons of coal, with a total value of 670 million USD, an increase of 216.8% in volume and 150.2% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

The main sources of imported coal are from two markets, Australia and Indonesia. Specifically, Australia is the largest coal supplier to Vietnam with 1.91 million tons imported in just one month, doubling in volume and increasing by nearly 64% in value compared to the same period in 2023.

Similarly, the amount of coal imported from Indonesia in January reached 1.65 million tons with a value of nearly 144 million USD, an increase of 3.3 times in volume and 167% in value compared to the same period last year.

Coal power is the main power source for this year

Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that among the group of fuel commodities including coal, crude oil, various types of petroleum, and liquefied natural gas imports, except for the import of various types of petroleum which decreased both in volume and value, the remaining three groups all increased significantly compared to the same period last year. Particularly, the coal group increased by 3.2 times in volume and 2.5 times in value compared to the same period.

In total, the volume of imported fuel commodities in January 2024 reached 7.51 million tons with a total value of 2.28 billion USD, an increase of over 7% in volume and over 6% in value compared to December 2023, and an increase of 90% in volume and 11.7% in value compared to the same period last year.

Previously, at the end of 2023, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued Decision No. 3111 approving the coal allocation chart for electricity production in 2024. Accordingly, the Ministry required investors of coal-fired power plants to arrange 74.307 million tons of coal for electricity production in 2024. Among them, the designed capacity of coal-fired power plants using imported coal is over 26 million tons.

According to Decision 3110 on the electricity supply plan and operation of the national power system in 2024 issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in 2024, the demand for coal for power generation is high, hence the increase in imported coal. The coal-fired power plants are expected to contribute approximately 159.3 billion kWh, while gas-fired power plants are expected to contribute 23.1 billion kWh.
