This week the first shipment of molasses from Vietnam arrived at Brisbane Port, to be distributed to Queensland farmers struggling with ongoing drought conditions. The molasses will be used as a cattle feed supplement following concerns that local supplies were running out and farmers would be unable to feed their cattle.

The 750-tonne shipment comes as a result of a joint effort between peak body AgForce and local importers to organise the molasses delivery, with almost 2500 tonnes total expected to be shipped to aid struggling farmers over the next three weeks.

“Molasses is an important energy feed supplement for cattle and the ongoing drought has all but exhausted local supplies as it has been in such high demand,” said AgForce CEO Michael Guerin. “AgForce sought feedback from members in recent months about what molasses they required going forward and have been working with importers on both short and long term solutions.”

Some producers are seeking regular molasses parcels as a short-term response to their cattle feed needs during the drought.

“This option is more expensive but it is providing an interim solution for farmers in desperate need,” said Guerin. “A longer-term bulk option is also being pursued, but this is more complex as there are extensive import permit processes and important biosecurity protocols that must be met.”
